Winter Activities in and around Lucerne

As the weather gets colder and the holiday season approaches, it's time to look forward to the special places to visit and fun acticities around the center of Switzerland.

  1. Klausjagen in Küssnacht

When night falls in Küssnacht on the 5th of December, people rush to the streets to take part in the historic Swiss tradition called "Klausjagen" or "St. Nicholas Chase," which originated in the Middle Ages. Up to 30,000 visitors come to spectate this colorful event every year. You can expect a loud and colorful display of Christmas cheer as whips fly through the air, bells are ringing, and locals carry their ornamental paper lanterns (Iffelen) through the cold winter streets of Küssnacht am Rigi. The procession starts at 20:15 on Seebodenstrasse on the 5th of December.

  1. Lucerne Christmas market

The city of Lucerne also has a lot to offer when it comes to Christmas events. "Rudolphs Weihnachtsspektakel" is a perfect example of what Lucerne has to offer this time of year. This centrally located Christmas market offers a chance to support local artisans and small businesses. It is the perfect place to find a meaningful and unique gift for yourself or a loved one around wintertime. Not to mention the traditional food and drinks that are everywhere throughout these markets. So, unwind, have some mulled wine, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Lucerne.

  1. Ice Skating by Lake Lucerne

Just around the corner from the Christmas market, you will find an ice skating rink directly on the lake with beautiful views of the mountains surrounding the city of Lucerne. After skating, you can step into the Chalet and enjoy a hot beverage to warm up and celebrate this occasion.

  1. Candle making in Lucerne

Another Christmastime tradition for some Swiss locals is "Kerzenziehen" or candle making. The comforting smell of beeswax engulfs you as you step into the cozy cabin and prepare for this traditional craft. With its central location, 5 minutes from Lucerne main station, Vögeligärtli makes a perfect day trip for festive Christmas spirits. Prepare to be enchanted by the surrounding Christmas market and enjoy this activity with your friends.

  1. Sledding on the Pilatus

If winter sports and stunning views excite you, sledding on Mount Pilatus is a winter activity you simply can't miss out on. With inexpensive offers on day passes and sled rentals, the Pilatus sledding trail is an ideal winter activity for a day trip with friends.
